My Life with the Saints
by
James Martin, S.J.
James Martin has led a thoroughly modern life: from a
lukewarm childhood Catholicism, to the Wharton School of Business, to the
executive fast track at General Electric, to the Jesuits, to a media career
in Manhattan. But at every step along the way he has been accompanied by
special friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. These holy men and women
are not just historical figures to him. Martin’s attachment to them is real
and personal. The saints have guided him. He convincingly shows how the
saints can be our friends too.
Martin’s saintly friends come from the whole of Christian history—from St.
Paul to John XXIII—and they include Thérèse of Lisieux, Joan of Arc,
Ignatius Loyola and other beloved figures. They accompany the author on a
pilgrimage that includes stops in a sunlit square of a French town, a quiet
retreat house on a New England beach, the housing projects in inner-city
Chicago, the sprawling slums of Nairobi, and a gorgeous Baroque church in
Rome. As James Martin’s inspiring, witty, and surprising account unfolds, we
see how saints can help us to find our way in the world.

The Great Divorce
by C. S. Lewis
C. S. Lewis takes us on a profound journey through both heaven and hell
in this engaging allegorical tale. Using his extraordinary descriptive
powers, Lewis introduces us to supernatural beings who will change the
way we think about good and evil.
In The Great Divorce C. S. Lewis again employs his formidable talent
for fable and allegory. The writer, in a dream, finds himself in a bus
which travels between Hell and Heaven. This is the starting point for an
extraordinary meditation upon good and evil which takes issue with
William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. In Lewis’s own words,
"If we insist on keeping Hell (or even earth) we shall not see Heaven:
if we accept Heaven then we shall not be able to retain even the
smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell."

Sacrament of Charity
(Sacramentum Caritatis)
by Pope Benedict XVI
The long awaited post-synodal exhortation on the
Eucharist from Pope Benedict XVI!
Pope Benedict teaches that the Eucharist finds its
source within the wellspring of love that is the Trinity,
the love that is so abundantly expressed in Jesus’ sacrifice
on the cross and in the new life of the Holy Spirit that
flows into the hearts of those who participate in his
sacrifice and receive him in Communion. The Holy Father also
shows how the Eucharist is the source and summit of the
Church’s life in its relation to the other sacraments,
especially the sacrament of Holy Orders and the sacrament of
Matrimony.
--Bishop William S. Skylstad, President, United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops
Set alongside Pope Benedict XVI's first encyclical God Is
Love (Deus Caritas Est) where he stressed the relationship
between the Eucharist and love, The Sacrament of Charity
picks up that theme and expands it as Pope Benedict explores
the mystery of eucharistic faith and how it reveals the
mystery of the Trinity. Released on the Feast of the Chair
of St. Peter, the Holy Father examines the important
relationship between the Eucharist and the other sacraments,
including the sacrament of the Church. He also highlights
the social implications of the Eucharist and firmly connects
it with the Church's social teaching.

Compendium
of the Catechism Two years in the making, the Compendium was prepared by a commission
headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope
presented the Compendium at the Vatican in late June. Containing 598
questions and brief answers, it makes the essential contents of the faith
accessible to the broadest possible audience.
The Pope said he hoped the compendium would give Catholics and
non-Catholics easy access to the basic and essential tenets of the
Catholic faith.
The new compendium, he said, is “an authoritative, certain and complete
text regarding the essential aspects of the faith of the Church” and it
is “in harmony with the catechism approved by the Pope and destined for
the whole church.”
Hopefully the Compendium will “reopen an ideal dialogue between the
teacher and the disciple, through an urgent series of questions, which
involve the reader, encouraging him to continue in the discovery of ever
new aspects of the truth of the faith,” Pope Benedict said.
The Holy Father expressed the hope that abbreviating the text and reducing
it to the essential “might favor the assimilation and possible
memorization of the contents.”
The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church originated in 2002
when the Congregation for the Clergy and the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith held an International Catechetical Congress to mark the tenth
anniversary of the release of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During
the congress, a suggestion was made that a more concise version of the
Catechism would be helpful for use with youth and young adults. Pope John
Paul II accepted the suggestion and appointed the special commission
headed by Cardinal Ratzinger. In 2004 a draft text was sent to Presidents
of Episcopal Conferences for consultation.
Seen as a companion to the widely-used Catechism of the Catholic Church,
the Compendium is structured in four parts like the Catechism. While the
text does contain some direct quotes from the Catechism used in a sidebar
fashion, the questions and answers themselves are original text.

A Jesuit Off-Broadway
Center Stage with Jesus, Judas, and
Life's Big Questions
by James Martin, S.J.
Called to the priesthood by God, Fr. James Martin was startled to get
a very different kind of call one evening in 2005: a phone call from actor
Sam Rockwell. Rockwell had been cast in the part of Judas Iscariot in an
Off-Broadway play where Judas was on trial for his crime of betraying Jesus;
would Martin be willing to offer some theological insights? Martin gladly
obliged, and within weeks playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis and other members
of the cast began to dialogue with Martin about a host of spiritual issues
that weighed on their minds: Can we believe the Bible? What was Jesus’
mission? What is sin? Does hell exist? Is anyone beyond God’s forgiveness?
A Jesuit Off-Broadway recounts Fr. Martin’s thrilling six months with
the LAByrinth Theater Company, as it created and performed The Last Days
of Judas Iscariot, which had a sold-out five-week run in New York. As
the occasionally profane and worldly playwright, director, and actors
struggled to understand theological issues and ideas, they strove to convey
them in an artistically convincing way to a largely secular audience.
Through it all, Martin learned lessons about theater and life, about how the
sacred and the secular aren’t always that far apart, and how questions often
tell us more than answers do.

Celebration of Discipline
The Faith of Spiritual Growth
by Richard J. Foster
In the twenty years since its publication, Celebration of
Discipline has helped over a million seekers discover a richer spiritual
life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. For this
special twentieth anniversary edition, Richard J. Foster has added an
introduction, in which he shares the story of how this beloved and enduring
spiritual guidebook came to be.
Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality,
Celebration of Discipline explores the classic "Disciplines," or central
spiritual practices, of the Christian faith. Along the way, Foster shows
that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to
spiritual growth can be found.
Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows
how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. The inward
Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study offer avenues of
personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity,
solitude, submission, and service help prepare us to make the world a better
place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and
celebration bring us nearer to one another and to God.
Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how these Disciplines
can become part of our daily activities---and how they can help us shed our
superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." He
offers crucial new insights, demonstrating how the biblical view of
simplicity, properly understood and applied, brings joy and balance to our
inward and outward lives and "sets us free to enjoy the provision of God as
a gift that can be shared with others." Celebration, often the most
neglected of the Disciplines, is revealed as critically important, for it
stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline
will help motivate Christians everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer
and spiritual growth.

The Dream Manager
by Matthew Kelly
A business parable about how companies can achieve remarkable results
by helping their employees fulfill their dreamsManaging people is
difficult. With disengagement and turnover on the rise, many managers are
scratching their heads wondering what to do. It's not that we don't dream of
being great managers, it's just that we haven't found a practical and
efficient way to do it. Until now.
The fictional company in this remarkable book is grappling with real
problems of high turnover and low morale -- so the managers begin to
investigate what really drives the employees. What they discover is that the
key to motivation isn't necessarily the promise of a bigger paycheck or
title, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. They also
learned that people at every level need to be offered specific kinds of help
and encouragement -- or our dreams will forever remain just dreams as we
grow dissatisfied with our lives and jobs.
Beginning with his important thought that a company can only become
the-best-version-of-itself to the extent that its employees are becoming
better-versions-of-themselves, Matthew Kelly explores the connection between
the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we all engage at work.
Tackling head-on the growing problem of employee disengagement, Kelly
explores the dynamic collaboration that is unleashed when people work
together to achieve company objectives and personal dreams.
The power of The Dream Manager is that simply becoming aware of
the concept will change the way you manage and relate to people instantly
and forever. What's your dream?

Hebrews
by Alan C. Mitchell
Scarcely any book of the New Testament (with the possible
exception of Revelation) is so perplexing as the “Letter to the
Hebrews.” Not really a letter, but a sermon with some features of a
letter added to it, not really by its putative author, Paul, but by an
anonymous Christian who wrote some of the most elegant Greek in the
Bible, not really addressed to the “Hebrews,” but to Christians,
probably in Rome—this is the work that Alan Mitchell explains in this
commentary. Many scholars have written fine commentaries on Hebrews,
and Mitchell stands on their shoulders, noting where he proposes
alternate interpretations. Mitchell pays particular attention to the
reliance of the author of Hebrews on the Greek Old Testament (the
Septuagint). He also compares the language of Hebrews with similar usage
and ideas of first-century Hellenistic Jewish authors, notably Flavius
Josephus and Philo of Alexandria. Furthermore, he situates Hebrews
against the background of the tradition of Hellenistic Moral Philosophy,
where that is appropriate. Mitchell thus locates Hebrews in its proper
thought-world, something that is essential for the modern reader in
dealing with some of the thornier questions raised by this biblical
book. Chief among these are the role of sacrificial atonement, the
question of “second repentance,” and the spiritual and moral formation
of the Roman Christians who were its recipients.
Like all the volumes in the Sacra Pagina series, this work
examines the text in detail, with careful attention to the words and
phrasing, and then brings those individual insights together into a
coherent summary. The bibliography and special lists appended to each
chapter cover the best of recent scholarship on the Letter to the
Hebrews. Hardcover (Item

Religious Literacy:
What Every American Needs
to Know--And Doesn't
by Stephen Prothero
*Starred Review* The author of I^ American Jesus (2003) opens
this important book with a paradox. To wit, Americans are deeply religious
I^ and profoundly ignorant about religion; that is, one of the most
religious countries is also a nation of "religious illiterates." Prothero
calls religious illiteracy dangerous because religion is one of the greatest
forces for good--as well as evil--in the world. Nowadays, standing on shaky
religious ground can be literally a matter of life and death. To cite two
brief examples of America's religious illiteracy: only half of American
adults can name one of the four Gospels, and 10 percent of Americans believe
that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. Prothero defines religious literacy--what
it is, and what it is not. He also discusses the two great religious
revivals in U.S. history, the Second Great Awakening of the nineteenth
century and the postwar revival of the 1940s and 1950s. He argues both the
constitutionality and the necessity of teaching--with an emphasis on
spreading knowledge, not inculcating values--about religion in public
schools and higher education. He suggests that every U.S. public high school
should require a course on the Bible and another on the religions of the
world. And he devotes an entire chapter to "a modest list" of a hundred or
so religious terms that he deems essential, from I^ Abraham to I^ Zionism,
to any American's religious knowledge. A must-read on its subject. June

Amazing Grace:
William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery
by Eric Metaxas
Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the
British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible
biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights
activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament.
At the center of this heroic life was a passionate twenty-year fight
to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as
well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies, a
victory achieved just three days before his death in 1833.
Metaxas discovers in this unsung hero a man of whom it can truly be
said: he changed the world. Before Wilberforce, few thought slavery was
wrong. After Wilberforce, most societies in the world came to see it as
a great moral wrong.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave
trade, HarperSanFrancisco and Bristol Bay Productions have joined
together to commemorate the life of William Wilberforce with the
feature-length film Amazing Grace and this companion biography,
which provides a fuller account of the amazing life of this great man
than can be captured on film.
This account of Wilberforce's life will help many become acquainted
with an exceptional man who was a hero to Abraham Lincoln and an
inspiration to the anti-slavery movement in America. Hardcover

The Seven Levels of Intimacy: The Art of
Loving and the Joy of Being Loved
by Matthew Kelly
A throwaway buzzword in pop psychology, intimacy remains a litmus test
for the health of relationships and is something everyone should strive
for, says Kelly, the bestselling author of The Rhythm of Life. "Intimacy
is the one thing a person cannot live happily without," he writes. Since
many people cling to the "pubescent notion" that intimacy and sex are
synonymous, Kelly begins by talking about what intimacy is not-sex,
common interests-and proffering up inspirational tidbits and oft heard
motivational questions ("Who energizes you?" "Why do they energize you?"
"How do you want to be remembered?") before hammering home the thesis of
this book: intimacy is a "legitimate need." His seven levels of
intimacy-clichés; facts; opinions; hopes and dreams; feelings; faults,
fears and failures; and legitimate needs-each get a chapter-length
discussion. Kelly advocates openness-in communication, enduring pain,
delaying gratification-and sprinkles in bits of spirituality in cajoling
readers to foster intimacy, and, in turn, love and the meaning of life.
"Life is about love. It's about whom you love and whom you hurt. Life's
about how you love and hurt the people close to you." His view may seem
simplistic, but Kelly's simple, direct prose and patient explanations
will appeal to spiritual readers.

The Mundelein Psalter
by Douglas Martis, editor
The Church’s prayer must
be allowed to speak for itself, to express the joy and grief, the
anguish and elation of God’s children across the ages and around the
globe. This volume hopes to offer an opening to the radical beauty of
the Judeo-Christian prayer, in an accessible, comprehensible way.
–from the Introduction
The Mundelein Psalter is the first
complete one-volume edition containing the approved English-language
texts of the Liturgy of the Hours with psalms that are pointed for the
chanting of the Divine Office. The music consists of simple yet
beautiful Gregorian-based modes composed for this Psalter. Developed at

The Book of Saints & Heroes
The first Christians to visit Europe and the British Isles
met pagans who told tales of fairies, talking beasts, and other
wonderful things. To these marvelous stories, they soon added new
ones about the Christian saints. Some were true, others improbable,
and many simply fantastic. In the ones we include here, you’ll meet
the saint who spent seven Easters on a whale’s back and the amiable
lion who was St. Jerome’s friend. You’ll see St. George fight the
dragon, and you’ll read about the fierce wolf St. Francis of Assisi
converted. But many of these stories have
in them scarcely a wave of the fairy wand. So you’ll also find here
true tales of great saints such as St. Louis of France, St. Vincent
de Paul, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary — souls
marked by courage, kindness, and piety.
These marvelous legends and exciting
true stories of Christian saints and heroes will provide many hours
of delightful reading to believers and non-believers alike! 336

entonces cardenal Joseph Ratzinger.
